By inheritance from his late father. Property of a Jersey gentleman. This coin, together with similar examples also in this sale, is possibly from the 'Cabalva' wreck; the 'Cabalva' was a British East Indiaman , wrecked at Cargados Carajos (also known as the Shoals of St. Brandon) while sailing from England to China on only her fourth voyage; she ran aground 7 July 1818 but some of her crew were later rescued; the estimated value of her lost cargo was 149,750, some of which, in the form of Spanish American 'pieces of eight', was recovered by divers who discovered the site of the wreck in 1985.
