Dated 1721 AD; 19th century copy. Later copy in lead; designed by Ottone Hamerani. Obv: VNICA SALVS legend with draped and armoured bt of James, right, Rev: QVID GRAVIVS CAPTA legend with Hanoverian horse left trampling English lion and Scottish unicorn, London in the distance; date MDCCXXI in exergue. See BCM 493; MI ii, 454/63. 40.68 grams, 49mm (2"). From a Lincolnshire collection. This scarce medallion was originally struck in silver and copper-alloy; following the Hanoverian succession in 1714 and the South Sea Bubble disaster of 1720, James is here shown as the 'only sure safeguard' or hope for the British nation; James is suggesting that Britain get rid of the Hanoverian George I and crown him as king instead; later copies were made, such as this one, in lead.
