A FINE BLUE AND WHITE FIVE-PIECE GARNITURE Kangxi period, circa 1700 Comprising three slender baluster vases, two cylindrical beaker vases and, unusually, five domed covers, the beaker covers with finials, all painted in even blue tones with two bands of elaborate, blue-ground lappets reserved with white floral and tendril meanders descending from the top rim and rising from the foot rim and with floral scrolling and diamond-shaped cells in the reserved spaces between. 9 3/4in (25cm) high (5). 3 This garniture is unusual in that all pieces have covers. The beaker covers are similar to lids common on drinking vessels of a similar date, and the domed lids, without finials, are similar to ones of larger size often accompanying larger decorative vases like the famous Kangxi period 'hawthorn' jars that later caused enormous interest, and generated record auction prices, among Victorian collectors. Such five-piece sets were known in Holland as De Kastels and were very popular across Europe. Interior designs in the late seventeenth century by Daniel Marot, further promoted, their use as decorative adjuncts above pediments, fir-places, and wall shelving.
