Description: Tall, slender vase with no neck and a pronounced shoulder. Seated on a plum tree branch that has just begun to blossom is an unusually long-tailed rooster, called onagatori. Parts of its coat of feathers are gilded. On the bottom is the signature KURO-DA 黒 田 tsukuru 造, to the right of which is TO-TO 京 都 (Tokyo) and, on the back of the vase, (engraved by) KO-EN 光 延 koku 刻. Kuroda, the workshop’s owner, was a samurai who spent some time in Paris and lived until 1917. Condition: Slight signs of age and wear Provenance: From an Austrian private collection
