Description: Polychrome pigments and gesso over wood, beard applied animal hair, free moving lower jaw attached with silk cords and the mustache painted with a brush. The white-faced mask of an old man or god was used in Noh and festival performances of the ancient play Okina. Condition: Typical traces of use and wear, with paint chipping on the right cheek and on the chin; the characteristic Pompoms made of hemp and glued on for eyebrows typical of this kind of masks are removed and painted over Provenance: From an important Austrian private collection, acquired before 1930. - with old collection numbers ‘4875’ & ‘FRANZ #808 A similar mask, but later, sold at Christie’s 22nd September 2004, lot 311.
