Description: The Nagasaki House in Edo Illustration from the 1802 three-volume picture booklet Pleasures in the Eastern Capital (Ehon Azuma asobi - 絵本東遊), published in 1802 The Nagasaki house in Edo/Nihonbashi was an inn used exclusively by the Dutch delegation. Once a year, the Dutch emissaries, who had to express their most subservient thanks for the permission to stay in Dejima as well as for the trade permit, were lodged in this house during their obligatory visit to the Shôgun. During their visits, the German doctors and scholars of Japan Engelbert Kaempfer (1651 - 1716) and Philipp von Siebold (1796 - 1866), who were working in service of the Dutch, stayed in the Nagasaki-ya, which piqued the curiosity of the Edo-ko and amazed them with its exotic occupants. Condition: Worn, with small holes on the edges Provenance: From a German private collection
