A RARE WOOD NETSUKE OF A FLYING TENNINWood netsuke. Japan, 19th centuryTennin, meaning ‘heavenly being’, are similar to western nymphs and live in Buddhist heaven. This openworked netsuke shows a rich, dense composition, with the body bent and flowing garment and scarves. The tennin is holding a sho, or ‘mouth organ’, in both hands. Himotoshi on the underside.
