A LACQUERED WOOD AND IVORY NETSUKE OF DARUMAWood, ivory and lacquer netsuke. Japan, 19th centuryDaruma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, is said to have lived in the 6th century, the 28th Patriarch of Buddhism and the first in Zen Buddhism. He became famous for his zazen in front of a wall, also known as Menpeki Kunen, ‘9 years in front of a wall’, as depicted in this netsuke. Daruma is completely wrapped in a warm, red blanket and stares into space. The lacquer is applied with the negoro technique, with shades of black coming through the layer or red lacquer. Remnants of gilding accentuate the folds of his robes. The belly, chest and face are inlaid ivory, enlivening the facial features. Himotoshi on the underside.
