A FOUR CASE LACQUER AND GOLD INRO BY KOMAKORYULacquer, gold and mother-of-pearl inro. Japan, late 18th centuryA four case inro, masterfully decorated with a peafowl (kujaku), a symbol of beauty and dignity, also an emblem of the deity Kujaku Myo-o, and able to heal snake bites. The magnificent tail, which spreads out over the entire rear side and is inlaid with mother-of-pearl in different hues, is crafted very gracefully. A blossoming cherry tree (sakura) is next to the peacock. Tamaki-e with gold, also gold nashiji both on the interior and exterior. Signature KO-MA KO-RYU 古 滿 巨柳 saku 作 on the underside. Koma Koryu is one of the most important artists from the very large Koma clan of lacquer masters, founded in the 17th century.
