A THREE CASE LACQUER AND GOLD INRO OF A STONE LANTERN AND PINELacquer and gold inro with mother-of-pearl inlays. Japan, late 18th to early 19th centuryA rectangular three case inro with shiny black roinuri on both the interior and exterior. One side shows an ishidoro (stone lantern) next to gnarled roots and the trunk of a pine tree. The other side shows another piece of this trunk. Branches and pine needles are painted gold and almost flat, with the leaves around the floor in part slightly raised. Three circular inlays with mother-of-pearl in the lantern and trunk. The abbreviated signature Sosho is unidentifiable. Old label “Collection of Arthur Kay [or Ray]” with number. Spherical ojime with leaf relief, netsuke of a saru mask showing a human face with monkey-like features, also called mashi. Signature on the back.
