Qing Dynasty Chinese Gilt bronze and jade inlaid Quatre foil lidded box. Immaculate Gilt bronze trinket box with inlaid jade medallion insert. Quatre-foiled vessel with domed lid, topped with stunning hand carved jade medallion. Gilt bronze has been worked into an intricate design, depicting scrolling foliage and vine tendrils. Inner flange circumscribed around the containers lip allows for a perfect fitment of the covering. Raised gilt bronze retainer outlines the medallion keeping it centered on the casing. Medallion is smooth to the touch with a milk-white coloration, adorned with a finely carved a crane amidst floral pedals. Cranes are known to resemble both longevity and wisdom. Mark on base, a incised horizontal four gilt script -KaiShu- characters, Qianlong Reign Period. Jade, as a stone, has five virtues. Its glossiness and warmth is like benevolence. Because inside and outside is the same, so that knowing the outside one knows the inside, this may be likened to righteousness. Its far-reaching sound (when struck) may be heard from afar, like wisdom. It is not easily bent, but can be broken, which may be likened to courage. Jade can be sharpened, but not to the point where it can injure people; this quality is like self-regulation or restraint.
