Chinese porcelain plate potted in a shallow vessel with board wide cavetto everted the rounded sides, raised upon a concave foot base. The central interior decorated with hand painting in famille rose design of roosters within a landscape against white under glazed ground. The rim adorned with gilt over glaze floral motif against carmine-red ground. Banded with fine gilt ring on the outer rim. Crowing as the sun rises, the rooster is considered a propitious yang creature, having the capacity to frighten off evil spirits. Further, the pronunciation of rooster in Chinese, is loosely homophonic to auspiciousness, both characters has the pronunciation ji but in different tones. Roosters crowns, or guan in Chinese, is homophonic with officials or public posts, guan, which are considered the path to wealth and power in the past. In addition to the auspicious emblem carried by the rooster, the combination of roosters and chrysanthemums, ju in Chinese, implies a rebus of guan ju yi pin as well, literally means achieving a top position. Mark on base, a six iron-red seal script -ZhuanShu- characters reign mark, QianLong Reign Period of Great Qing Dynasty.
