Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen (Danish/American, 1850-1921) The Schooner Yachts Dauntless and Coronet Signed and dated "ANTONIO JACOBSEN/1908" l.r., titled along the bottom of the image. Oil on board, 14 x 21 in., in a later gilt molded frame. Condition: No apparent retouch. Literature: Harold Sniffen, Antonio Jacobsen The Checklist (The Mariner's Museum, 1984), p. 88, #22. Exhibitions: Ship Portraits Owned in New Jersey, Montclair Art Museum, Montclair, New Jersey, December 16, 1973-February 3, 1974. Note: This work, painted in Hoboken, New Jersey, shows two schooner yachts flying New York Yacht Club pennants flanked by a freighter, passenger ferry, and three tug boats. The Dauntless was built in 1866 by Forsythe & Morgan in Mystic, Connecticut, and was owned by James Gordon Bennet of New York. The Coronet was built in 1885 by C. & R. Poillon, Brooklyn, New York, and was owned by R.T. Bush of New York.
