NEVERS, 18th century. Revolutionary ASSEMBLY with contoured edge in stanniferous earthenware. Polychrome decoration of big fire said to the "swearing priest". Representing a cleric on a mound holding the Constitution in his right hand, it bears the inscription "I swear to uphold with all my might the Constitution &". On the reverse side handwritten inscription "Ripault". Diam. 23 cm. In 1791, priests were state officials and were required to take a public oath of obedience to the constitution and the revolutionary government.
