The Fondaco dei Turchi, or the Ottoman warehouse, is one of the first great palaces that visitors to Venice see along the Grand Canal when approaching the Rialto Bridge from Santa Lucia station. However, the palace first received its current sumptuous marble facade and flanking columns during an inauthentic historicist restoration in the 19th century. Michele Marieschi's veduta shows the appearance of the Fontego dei Turchi, as the structure is referred to in the Venetian dialect, in the 18th century prior to the restoration. The painting depicts the Fontego dei Turchi from the opposite side of the Canal Grande, called the Campo San Marcuola after the parish church situated there. To the left of the palace is the Fontego del Megio, the Venetian millet warehouse, as well as the Baroque Palazzo Belloni-Battagia and the Ca´ Tron, two of the palaces along the Grand Canal that have retained their original appearance to this day. Like the millet storehouse beside it, the brick building of the Fontego dei Turchi also has large gates through which goods could be loaded and unloaded. Unlike the Fontego dei Tedechi, or German warehouse, located directly on the Rialto, the Fontego dei Turchi was not originally built in the 13th century as a merchant warehouse. For many years it remained in the possession of the Este family, the powerful margraves and later dukes of Ferrara, who used the structure as an opulent palace. It was first purchased by Ottoman merchants in 1621 who converted the building from a palace to a storehouse. It was used by them as such well into the 19th century. Michele Marieschi painted two further versions of this composition, one of which is housed in the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte in Naples. Ralph Toledano dates the present work to around 1740 and thus to the late period of this artist, who died in his early thirties in 1743. Der Fondaco dei Turchi, das Warenhaus der Osmanen, ist einer der ersten großen Paläste, die der Venedig-Reisende heute auf dem Canal Grande erblickt, wenn er vom Bahnhof Santa Lucia Richtung Rialto-Brücke fährt. Der Palast mit der prachtvolle Marmorfassade und den zwei flankierenden Türmen hat seine heutige Erscheinung jedoch erst im 19. Jahrhundert – nach seiner historisierenden und verfälschenden Restaurierung – erhalten. Wie der Fontego dei Turchi, so seine Bezeichnung im venezianischen Dialekt, im 18. Jahrhundert aussah, zeigt diese Vedute Michele Marieschis. Das Gemälde stellt den Fontego dei Turchi von der gegenüberliegenden Seite des Canal Grande dar, dem Campo San Marcuola, benannt nach der gleichnamigen großen Pfarrkirche. Zur linken des Fontego dei Turchi sieht man den Fontego del Megio, den venezianischen Hirsespeicher, zudem den barocken Palazzo Belloni-Battagia sowie den Ca´ Tron – Paläste am Canal Grande, die ihr Aussehen bis heute bewahrt haben. Der Fontego dei Turchi zeigt sich hier, wie der benachbarte Hirsespeicher, als Backsteinbau mit großen Toren an der Fassade, an denen die Waren be- und entladen wurden. Anders als das Warenhaus der Deutschen, der Fontego dei Tedeschi unmittelbar am Rialto, wurde der Fontego dei Turchi im 13. Jahrhundert nicht als Warenhaus errichtet. Lange Zeit war er im Besitz der Este, den mächtigen Markgrafen und später Herzögen von Ferrara, die hier prachtvoll Hof hielten. Erst 1621 erwarben die osmanischen Kaufleute den Palast und gestalteten ihn zu einem Warenhaus um. Als solcher diente er ihnen bis in das 19. Jahrhundert. Michele Marieschi hat zwei weitere Versionen der Komposition geschaffen, von denen sich eine im Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte in Neapel befindet. Ralph Toledano datiert das vorliegende Gemälde um 1740 und damit in die späte Schaffenszeit des Künstlers, der kaum 30jährig 1743 verstarb.
