Jean-Baptiste Perroneau, together with Maurice Quentin de la Tour and the Venetian Rosalba Carriera, who also worked in France for a time, form a trio of the greatest pastellists of the second half of the 18th century. Perroneau travelled to the French province for portrait commissions and thus came to Abbeville in northern France in 1767. Here he painted several portraits, including the famous portrait of the cloth manufacturer Abram van Robais (now in the Louvre) in 1869 and this one the following year. Jean-Baptiste Perroneau gehört mit Maurice Quentin de la Tour und der zeitweilig auch in Frankreich wirkenden Venezianerin Rosalba Carriera zu dem Trio der großen Pastell-Maler in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Für Porträtaufträge bereiste Perroneau auch die französische Provinz und kam so 1767 in das nordfranzösische Abbeville. Hier malte er mehrere Bildnisse, darunter 1769 das berühmte Porträt des Tuchfabrikanten Abram van Robais (heute im Louvre) sowie im folgenden Jahr das vorliegende Blatt. Es zeigt die Gattin des Militär-Kommandanten Nicolas La Boucher D´Ailly im Alter von 42 Jahren.
