Provenance: Italian private collection.
Born in Kyoto, Tsunenobu was a leading exponent of the Kanō school, the longest-lived and one of the most glorious in Japan. Disciple of his uncle Tanyu (1602-1674), he was head of the official atelier of the shōgun. In 1704 he was awarded the honorary title of hōgen and in 1709 that of hōin, the most distinguished that could be received. His most gifted pupil was Ogata Kōrin (1658-1716).
