An inkstone is a stone mortar for the crushing pigment into ink. Traditional Chinese ink was usually hardened into sticks for easier transportation and conservation. Even a minor quantity of liquid could be applied to the end of a pigment-stick, and that end would be pulverized with the flat surface of the ink stone.
