He was also called Nanji Laoren ('Old Man of the South Pole'). Compare with a related soapstone figure of Shoulao, 17th/18th century, illustrated by B.von Herbert, Schätze Chinas aus Museen der DDR, Hildesheim, 1990, no.131.
