A pair of Chinese bronze figures of Ananda and Mahakasyapa standing on double lotus thrones, with serene faces, downcast eyes and elongated earlobes, they are dressed in richly pleated robes, borders engraved with flowers, hands joined in front of chest. 17th century. Weight 3590 g. and 4124 g. H. c. 35 cm. (2) Provenance: From a Danish family settled in Shanghai from 1922 to 1946. Thence passed down in the family. The two disciples Ananda and Mahakasyapa were followers of Buddha Shakyamuni. The two figures would most likely have flanked a statue of the Buddha. The iconography of the figures adher to a typical portrayel of the two disciples. Mahakasyapa was the older of them, portrayed with heavy eyebrows, protruding and furrowed forehead, and wrinkled neck. Whilst Ananda was the younger, portrayed with a younger and fleshier face with urna on forehead.
