A Chinese wucai ‘Dragon and Phoenix’ bowl Of circular section, the deep rounded sides rising from a short straight foot to a gently flaring rim, decorated in wucai enamels with a design of alternating dragon and phoenix among floral sprays, the five-clawed dragons in pursuit of flaming pearls, all below a band of bajixiang (the ‘Eight Buddhist Emblems’) alternating with ruyi-heads, the centre with a roundel enclosing a dragon in iron-red enamels pursuing a ‘flaming pearl’, the glazed base with the square seal mark of Daoguang in underglaze blue and of the period. Period: Daoguang (1821-1850). Diameter: 13 cm.
