A fine and very rare 19th century engraved gilt brass desk timepiece in the form of an inkwell Attributed to Thomas Cole, London set on a turned ebonised base, with concave base engraved with interlocking strapwork centred by the hexagonal socle carrying the squat-vase shaped well, the body of the well similarly engraved with a border of interlocking strapwork, the upper part with a ball finial over further repeat patterns, the lid lifting to reveal the 3.25 inch silvered Roman dial with repeat strapwork on a hatched ground. The lower section carrying a cut glass ink well gilt lid and dependent nib-ferrule, framed by a presentation inscription 'James MacHenry / FROM HIS AFFECTIONATE FRIENDS / BURY & SOPHIE BURY / CHRISTMAS 1883'. The movement with going barrel, lever escapement and plain three arm balance wound and set via apertures revealed on un-screwing the ball finial. 10 in (25.4cm) diameter of ebonised base.
