A weight driven German clock Unsigned The iron frame consisting of four worked rectangular-section corner uprights pinned top and bottom to the horizontal frames at 45 degrees and rising towards the upper bell-supporting structure held in tension between the four fancy quatrefoil finials, the 5.5inch diameter heavy cast bell secured via a substantial lug pinned from above, and with turned scored decoration. The movement with all wheels and pinions of iron mounted between three upright flat bars and two horizontal. The going train of three wheels terminating in an upright verge crown wheel and a shaped foliot bar with movable timing weights to the tips, suspended on silk. The rear of the crownwheel arbor and the bottom end of the vertical verge are both set in U-shaped arms rivetted to the rear of the centre bar, the top of the verge is held in a similar curved arm rivetted to the upright cock pinned to the horizontal centre bar above. The strike train with outside countwheel with internal teeth driven by a 6-leaf pinion, overlift is by a shaped cam on the second arbor with twin slots to allow for locking. The hours are struck via a vertical hammer with shaped shaft in order to give a 'stop' against the upper horizontal frame, with very heavy shaped head and a wire link to a horizontal leaf spring set to the base. The dial with painted iron plate 11.25 inches by 4.5 inches with applied arch to the top, decorated with a figure of a seated and crowned Mary holding the Christ child, the dial 6 inches in diameter with gothic-style Roman numerals and painted half hour marks, with decorated centre and fancy iron hand, decorated with a pair of shields below. 54cms (21ins) high.
