DAVID WOODLOCK (1842-1929), IRISH/ENGLISH BEARDED MAN PLAYING A FIDDLE Oil on board; signed upper left, inscribed indistinctly to a handwritten label at the top centre of the stretcher, with indistinctly inscribed provenance in pen and ink to the exhibition label verso, a partial typed title with a partial front cover of "... Catalogue ...collection of Pictures," affixed to the bottom verso, dated 1904 29.5 ins x 21.5 ins; 74.9 cms x 54.6 cms Provenance: Exhibited in 1929 while with the collector (partially visible): inscribed "...Rowland Huf..." to the exhibition label verso backing; Private Collection, Ontario Exhibited: Corporation of Liverpool, Walker Art Gallery in "Woodlock Exhibition, 1929" while with the collector "... Rowland Huf..." label verso and with an earlier partial "... Catalogue ... Collection... Pictures, 1904" label verso with a small typed label inscribed "'...Hornpipe' by David" under this label verso Note: An Irish-born painter of both oils and watercolours, David Woodlock studied at the Liverpool School of Art where he worked under John Finnie. Woodlock was a founding member of the Liverpool Sketching Club and a member of the Liverpool Academy of Arts. He exhibited many works, including this lot, at the Walker Art Gallery. He also showed at the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Scottish Academy and at the Dudley Gallery Art Society. This work has the remains of a newspaper clipping affixed to the verso from “The Times,” London, dated Monday, March, 1899 and titled “The Water-colours….” Estimate: $600—900
