A black-lacquer sage-jubako (portable picnic set) Edo period (1615-1868), probably mid 19th century Comprising a rectangular frame fitted with a gilt handle and holding a four-tiered box and lid, lacquered on the exterior in Kodaiji-style gold hiramaki-e and hirame on a roiro-nuri ground with flowering camellia and pine, the bottom shelf with a rectangular box embellished with omodaka (three-leaf arrowhead), tsuta (ivy) and kikyo (Chinese bellflower) on a meandering stream, fitted with a cover inset on the top for resting two pewter sake bottles beneath an open area containing a black-lacquer rectangular tray decorated with trailing clematis, the upper shelf of the frame supporting one square tray similarly lacquered with windswept wild chrysanthemums bending over a fence and a red-lacquer sakazuki, the sides of the frame and the top with further clematis and trailing vine; unsigned. 33.6cm x 33.4cm x 19cm (13in x 13 1/16in x 7½in).
