A gold-lacquer kodansu (cabinet) Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926) era, early 20th century The rich kinji ground sumptuously decorated with a continuous view of the garden and veranda of the Rokujo Mansion, surrounded by pines, flowering plum trees, and cut pine saplings, lacquered in predominantly gold takamaki-e with profuse highlights of mura-nashiji, Gyobu nashiji, and kirikane, the top, front, left and inside of the cabinet scattered with 17 characters inlaid in solid gold from a waka poem from Chapter 23, Hatsune (The First Warbler), of Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji), the right hinged door inlaid in solid gold high relief with a bush-warbler on the veranda, both doors opening to reveal within five drawers similarly lacquered with pine trees in fenced garden and on the inside of the doors a palanquin stationed beneath flowering cherry branches and willow trees, applied with silvered-metal mounts chased with scrolling foliage; unsigned; with a black-lacquered wood storage box. 24.5cm x 27.1cm x 18cm (9 5/8in x 10 5/8in x 7 1/8in). The Hatsune chapter tells of Prince Genji visiting his daughter in Lady Murasaki's quarters in his Rokujo Mansion and the Akashi Lady (mother of his daughter) sending bamboo baskets of gifts and an artificial uguisu (bush-warbler) on a fabricated branch of plum blossom.
