An inlaid shakudo squat globular koro (incense burner) and cover By Toshishige for the Nogawa Company, Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century Delicately inlaid and worked in chiselled relief of gold, silver, shibuichi and bronze with sprays of flowering chrysanthemums draping across the body, the cover crisply carved and pierced with a mass of densely overlapping chrysanthemum blossoms, applied with silver rims; the base signed with chiselled characters Toshishige koku beneath the mark of the Nogawa Company. 11.5cm x 14cm (4½in x 5½in).
