A Satsuma compressed globular vase By Yabu Meizan (1853-1934), Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century The body of exaggerated ovoid form, with flared foot and square neck, the upper section decorated with four lobed panels, each depicting a different scene including a peasant carrying brushwood and making his way up a mountain path flanked on the left by a waterfall, sparrows perched and flying among maple branches, a summer outdoor scene of children playing go, catching goldfish and cavorting around a fountain, another New Year scene of children with kites and hanetsuki (battledores), all reserved on a ground of simulated cloth embellished with millefleurs, chrysanthemums and cherry blossoms; the upper shoulder with manji diaper, the lower section decorated all around with stems of irises, the foot with a narrow band of repeated geometric motifs; the base signed on a gilt seal Yabu Meizan. 11.5cm x 15cm (4½in x 5 7/8in).
