A Satsuma teabowl By Nakamura Baikei, Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century Delicately decorated in enamels and gilt with a sumptuous, continuous snowscape depicting a snow-clad village and pavilions enveloped in snow, two peasants in the centre foreground at their daily chores walking on a bridge spanning over a river, another two figures stopping in front of a torii gate leading to a shrine, a snow-decked mountain range in the distance, the neck with a lappet enclosing densely clustered geometric motifs, a narrow band of repeated key fret above the foot; signed in gilt just above the foot Baikei tsukuru with a gold seal above a long self-congratulatory inscription within a characteristic black ground, scrolled square brocade reserve. 7.7cm x 10.2cm (3in x 4in).
