Two stoneware vases with appliqué decoration Both by Inoue Ryosai III, Sumidagawa, Meiji era (1868-1912), 20th century Each modelled in high relief with a thick flambé glaze covering the neck and trickling down the shoulder, the first decorated with three karako (Chinese boys) walking along a cliff's edge with a drum, 33.6cm (13¼in) high; the second vase with a continuous scene of various tea-ceremony vessels and implements, 35.2cm (13 7/8in) high; each vase signed in underglaze blue Inoue Ryosai within a ceramic tsubo-shaped seal.
