ANONYMOUS Muromachi (1333-1573), Momoyama (1573-1615), or Edo (1615-1868) period, 16th/17th century Ko Shohei (Chinese: Huang Chuping) Riding a Ram or Goat, kakejiku (hanging scroll), ink on paper in silk mounts, with two undeciphered seals; the jikusaki (scroll ends) of ivory, with an unassociated lacquered wood storage box inscribed Kaiho Yusho hitsu Taikobo no zu. Overall: 214.9cm x 71.4cm (84 5/8in x 28 1/8in); image: 116.3cm x 50.7cm (45¾in x 19 15/16in). (2). 注脚 Provenance: Purchased from H. Taniguchi, Kyoto, 1975. A distinguished private collection. Huang Chuping was a Daoist priest of the Jin dynasty (265-420) who started life as a shepherd but later retired to a mountaintop retreat and became a celebrated Daoist immortal who is still an object of veneration in southeastern China.
