Anonymous Kamakura (1185-1333) or Muromachi (1333-1573) period, 14th/15th century Shrine Pilgrimage; fragment of a makimono (narrative horizontal scroll) mounted as a kakejiku, ink and colours on paper in silk mounts, depicting female pilgrims of different classes arriving at one of the grand shrines in the mountainous Kumano region, at right two female pilgrims on foot wearing characteristic conical straw hats approach the shrine's main torii arch, in the foreground the retinue of an aristocratic woman on horseback with more sophisticated headgear passes by, two male figures within the shrine, unsigned; with a plain wood storage box and cardboard slipcase.
