TOSA MITSUSADA (1738-1806) Edo period (1615-1868), late 18th/early 19th century A set of 12 album leaves, in ink and colours on silk, each depicting a scene from chapters of Genji monogatari (The Tale of Genji), the inside front and back painted on gold paper with windswept autumnal grasses and plants, each sealed Tosa Mitsusada except for the last signed Edokoro azukari Tosa Junshii no ge Tosa no kami Fujiwara Mitsusada hitu with seal Mitsusada. Each approx., 25cm x 25cm (9 7/8in x 9 7/8in). 注脚 The second son of Tosa Mitsuyoshi (1700-1772), in 1754 Tosa Mitsusada was appointed Edokoro azukari (high-ranking artist working for the Imperial Court) and in 1789 he was commissioned to paint fusuma (sliding doors for the renovation of the Imperial Palace in Kyoto. He left a number of copies of ancient Chinese paintings but was also a staunch exponent of the native Tosa tradition.
