A mid-19th century Italian 950 standard silver covered twin handled sugar bowl, Turin circa 1840 by Carlo Balbino Of lobed ‘melonized’ form upon a shaped foot, the everted C scroll rim with cast and applied flower heads. Twin scroll form handles. The domed pull off lid surmounted by a detachable foliate finial upon an acanthus leaf calyx. Marked underneath with Kingdom of Sardinia first standard mark (used 1824- 1872), Torino town mark (bull’s head), makers mark (a lion between CB). Length – 20 cm / 7.9 inches Height – 17.5 cm / 6.9 inches Weight – 598 grams / 19.23 ozt Carlo Agostino Balbino (1777-1824 master 1798) was the founder of a firm that, since the early 19th century, became the primary silver manufacturer of Turin. Balbino workshop was supplier of the Royal House of Savoy and its silverware is present in the collection of the Royal Palace Museum (Turin) and in the equipment of the Quirinale Palace (President of the Italian Republic) in Rome.
