An unusual Victorian sterling silver wine ewer or claret jug, London 1851 by Joseph Angell II Of panelled baluster form raised upon four bold scroll feet with shaped cartouche junctions. The everted spout with a cast scroll rim with a hinged domed lid of conforming shape surmounted by a detachable pyriform finial. The C scroll handle fitted with ivory insulators pinned to a bifurcated scroll lower junction. The body with engraved decoration of foliage, a cartouche to each side one engraved with an initial C in flourished cursive script. Fully marked underneath, part-marked to lid and handle. Height – 34 cm / 13.4 inches Weight – 1392 grams / 44.75 ozt
