Note: According to Christian teaching, Jesus promised the keys to heaven to St Peter: in the Gospel of Matthew 16:19, Jesus says to Peter 'I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on Earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on Earth shall be loosed in heaven.' This small-scaleposition depicts Peter as an older man wearing yellow and blue robes with a key in hand. The figure of St Peter is situated in a vast landscape with little to distract attention from him. It was possibly conceived in the context of a series of portraits of Saints, and the treatment is reminiscent of the Central Italian School.Please refer to department for condition report
