After David Teniers the Younger, Flemish 1610-1690- An Allegory of the Four Seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter; oils on panel, each bears monogram 'Dt.F' (lower left, 'Winter' lower right), the second bears old label attached to the reverse of the panel, each 17.6 x 12.5 cm., a set of four (4) inmon mount. (VAT charged on hammer price) Note: Several sets of the âAllegory of the Four Seasonsâ were produced by Teniers himself in around 1644. See, for example, Anon. sale, Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 22 May 1990, lot 34; Anon. sale, Christieâs, Amsterdam, 20 November 2012, lot 26; and The National Gallery, London [NG857-NG860]. Each are similar in design to the present works but differ inpositional details. In the present works by one of Teniersâ many followers, the artist, as in the , has appropriated human forms to embody the essence of the four seasons: âSpringâ is a gardener carrying a young orange tree to plant in a formal garden; âSummerâ is a farmer harvesting the crop; âAutumnâ is an inn-keeper crowned with a wreath of vine branches and raising a glass of wine; and âWinterâ is an elderly bearded man in a fur cap and robe standing before a frozen village skating scene, with his coal brazier further emphasising the hards of the season. Please refer to department for condition report
