Andreas Martin, Flemish 1720-1767-  A mountainous river landscape with figures on a path, a classical building beyond; oil on panel, signed 'Andreas. Martien' (lower left, strengthened), 35 x 50.6 cm. Provenance: The Hon. Mrs Webb (according to an oil label attached to the reverse).; Anon. sale, Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 5 May 2009, lot 55.; Private Collection, UK. Note: Martin lived and worked in Brussels and was celebrated in his time and afterwards for his imaginary landscape paintings, topographical landscapes, cityscapes of Brussels and its environs, and rural genre scenes. The present work â a highly romanticised and idealised landscape, with an imposing classical building, a fortified hilltop edifice, a gentle stream, and luscious vegetation â is a typical example of his more fantastical works, and very much recalls the late Mannerist landscape tradition of Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625). Such paintings of Martinâs typically include travellers on horseback and on foot as in the present work. Martin also documented important historical events in Brussels such as the âEntry into Brussels of Archduchess Maria Elisabeth of Austriaâ (c.1725, Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium). Please refer to department for condition report
