After George Francis Joseph, ARA, Irish / British 1764-1846- Portrait of the Reverend Samuel Glasse, DD FRS (1735-1812), half-length, sitting at a desk; oil on canvas, 92 x 72.2 cm. Provenance: John Robinson, Esq.; By whom bequeathed to George Henry Glasse.; By whom presented to The Marine Society, 26 January 1804.; Anon. sale, Sothebyâs, London, 28 April 2021, lot 423 (as Circle of John Hoppner, R.A.). Literature: Marine Society Catalogue of Paintings and Works of Art, 1905, cat.1 (as Artist Unknown). Note: The present work is possibly a copy of an engraving by William Bond, first published in 1803 (See National Portrait Gallery no.D2779). However, given the fact that it must have been executed in the same year of the print's first publication in 1803,bined with the owner history of the painting passing to the sitter's son, one cannot preclude the notion that it is the original portrait by Joseph (whereabouts unknown). Samuel Glasse, a member of a group of High-Church Anglicans, was First Chaplain to the Marine Society from 1781 to 1812. On the portrait it is stated that he was Chaplain from 1756, yet he was not appointed a Member of themittee until 1769, and a letter from him on 15 March 1769 accepting his appointment to themittee clearly shows that this was his first acquaintance with the Society. Please refer to department for condition report
