Circle of Joseph Wright of Derby, ARA, British 1734-1797- Portrait of a lady, half-length, wearing yellow and blue dress with lace trim, turned to the right; oil on canvas, 76.8 x 63.2 cm. Provenance: With Sabin Galleries Ltd, UK, After 1971 (according to a label attached to the reverse of the previous frame). Note: Portrayed in a feigned oval, the elegant portrait of the anonymous sitter here reflects the influence of Wright of Derby who worked in the studio of London painter Thomas Hudson (1701-1779) from 1751-1753. Lit from the left, the artistâs confident treatment of light and shade sensitively models the young ladyâs features and is reminiscent of the early handling of Wrightâs portraits. The style of the sitterâs elegant dress, with the distinctive ribboned crossing, is echoed in Wrightâs âPortrait of a lady, traditionally identified as Susannah Fentonâ, which sold at Chiswick Auctions, London, 20 March 2019, lot 14.Please refer to department for condition report
