Note: Portrayed in a feigned oval, the elegant portrait of the anonymous sitter here reflects the influence of Wright of Derby who worked in the studio of London painter Thomas Hudson (1701-1779) from 1751-1753. Lit from the left, the artist’s confident treatment of light and shade sensitively models the young lady’s features and is reminiscent of the early handling of Wright’s portraits. The style of the sitter’s elegant dress, with the distinctive ribboned crossing, is echoed in Wright’s ‘Portrait of a lady, traditionally identified as Susannah Fenton’, which sold at Chiswick Auctions, London, 20 March 2019, lot 14.Please refer to department for condition report
