Jacopo Fabris, Italian 1689-1761- Veduta of the Canal Grande with the Fondaco dei Turchi; oil on canvas, bears old label with date '1719' (on the reverse), 56.5 x 82.5 cm. Provenance: With Howard, Davies Street London, where purchased in 1973.; Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is based on an engraving entitled âIl Fondaco dei Turchiâ (plate 15) from the series âIl gran Teatro di Veneziaâ (The great theatre of Venice), published by Domenico Lovisa (1690-1750) in 1720 and then reprinted several times over the course of the 18th Century (reproduced in Dario Succi, âLa Serenissima Nello Specchio di Rameâ, Vol I, 2013, p.84, no.17). Fabris left Venice in 1720 and did not return there, so the majority of his Venetian views are indeed based on the engravings and paintings of other artists. The Veneto-Gothic style palazzo Fondaco dei Turchi (Turkâs Inn) occupies the principal space in the right hand section of the canvas, with the Public Granary and the Battaglia Palace to the left. In the foreground are scattered figures, dress in both Western and Ottoman dress. Fabris specialised in painting such architectural views in Venice and Rome, and was also active as a theatre painter. He was in Rome in his early years and was likely in contact with Canaletto (1697-1768) there, who had arrived in the city in 1719. For much of his life he worked in Germany, as a court painter at Karlsruhe (1719-21), in Hamburg (1724-8), and at the Berlin Opera in the service of Frederick II the Great. In 1746 he moved to Copenhagen and entered the court of Frederick IV, subsequently teaching architecture and perspective at the Academy of Art, Charlottenbourg. According to Dario Succi, the attribution of this work is confirmed by the distinctive stylistic and technical characteristics of the Venetian artist. This is particularly apparent in the buildings, elegantlypressed to give them a delicate, vertical appearance; in the treatment of the grey-pink clouds; and in the artistâs application of the white flecks of paint in the areas of disturbed water. We are grateful to Dario Succi for confirming the attribution of the present lot. Please refer to department for condition report
