George Morland, British 1763-1804- Town; and Country; each pencil and watercolour on paper, the second signed and dated 'G.Morland / 1786.' (lower right), each 32 x 24.5 cm., a pair (2). Provenance: The Executors of Mrs Lockett Agnew sale, Christie's, London, 15 June 1923, lot 12 [90gns (Â94 10s) to Good[en] & Fox].; With Thomas Agnew & Sons, London. Note: Depictions of urban and country folk at work and play were popular with art audiences in the late-eighteenth century. The rural scenes in particular provided a reassuring vision of timeless rural life whereas in reality the countryside was changing rapidly, with the introduction of modern farming techniques and the growth of political unrest. Over the course of his career, Morland's elegant and refined subjects gradually gave way almost exclusively to scenes from humble life in the towns and countryside with lively gro of men, women, children and animals. Please refer to department for condition report
