William Pitt, British fl.1851-1890- Roadside Cottages at Coombe, Devon; oil on canvas, mounted as tondo, signed and dated with the artist's initials '18. Wp. 62.' (lower right), further signed, inscribed and dated 'Roadside. Cottages. at.be. / Devon / Wn. Pitt. 1862.' (on the reverse), 43.8 x 43.8 cm. Provenance: The Collection of Herbert Kennard, UK. Note: Birmingham born, Pitt lived and worked there in his early years before moving to London at some point after 1861. He specialised in landscapes and riverscape scenes and often painted views of Devon, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. He exhibited at Londonâs Royal Academy, the British Institution, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and at the Manchester City Art Gallery. By the late 1880s, he had moved back to live in Birmingham. Examples of his work can be found in a number of museums including the Bristol Museum, Dundee Art Gallery, Haverfordwest Town Museum, National Library of Wales, Royal Cornwall Museum, Russell-Cotes Museum, Scolton Manor Museum and the ley Art Gallery.Please refer to department for condition report
