Note: Born in Munich, Hartmann was a pupil of the Munich Academy, was a member of the prestigious Munich School of Painters, which was in its prime during his lifetime, and was awarded medals in Vienna in 1869 and 1872. He specialised in depicting humble horses at work or at rest rather than the prize-winning racehorses, hunters and grand coach horses more frequently treated as subjects for nineteenth-century painting.Please refer to department for condition report
