Peter Paul Hubner, Austrian / British 1870-1928- Hadleigh Castle; oil on board, signed, inscribed and dated '1926' (on the reverse, according to the 1988 Christie's catalogue), 13.8 x 18.8 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's South Kensington, 16 August 1988, lot 118.; Where purchased by the present owner. Note: Hubner was born in Bohemia, Austria and at some point during subsequent years moved to England. He frequently painted the landscapes of Essex, Suffolk and Worcestershire. The romantic ruins of Hadleigh Castle are situated in Essex, overlooking the Thames Estuary and the Essex marshes. The building was begun in about 1215, during the reign of King Henry III, by Hubert de Burgh, but was extensively refortified by Edward III during the Hundred Years War and became a favourite residence of the aging king.Please refer to department for condition report
