Augustus Charles Pugin, French / British 1762-1832- Leicester Square; pencil, pen and brown ink and watercolour on paper, signed, inscribed and dated 'Pugin 1817 Leicester Square' (lower left), 20.5 x 34.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Augustus Charles Pugin was the father of the better known Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852). Born in France, little is known of his early life but he probably came to England in around 1792 where he entered the Royal Academy Schools and subsequently worked as an architectural draughtsman for John Nash (1752-1835), who was at that time based in Wales. He moved to London with Nash in 1796 and steadily became an expert on Gothic architecture and architectural drawing. The Art Institute of Chicago houses many of his drawings and watercoloursPlease refer to department for condition report
