Description

An Art Nouveau silver-coloured-metal with gilt finish coffee set, probably American, with a pair of Gorham (American) silver-gilt sugar tongs, all inscribed 'Anoakia' except the tray, c.1914-1939, the sugar tongs are stamped with marks for Gorham Manufacturingpany, Sterling, I V M, everything else is unmarked,prising:- a coffee pot, milk jug, sugar bowl, six c and a twin-handled tray with recessed circles for the receptacles, each piece fashioned with overlapping petals of the 'California Poppy', the handles and tongs and bases of the vessels embellished with leaves and hammered texturing, the bases with a ribbon motif engraved 'ANOAKIA', (the silver-coloured metal handles and bases test as 925 standard and the metal beneath the gilded parts tests as 800 standard), Tray 49.8 cm wide, coffee pot 23 cm high, milk 10.7 cm high, sugar 11.2 cm high, coffee 9 cm high, tongs 11.5 cm long (10) (VAT charged on hammer price) Anita Baldwin hired the architect Arthur Benton to design and build her new home 'ANOAKIA' (1913/1914) and it boasted fifty rooms and murals painted by the American artist Maynard Dixon. The name Anoakia was created from the first two letters of Anita, the oak trees on the land, and the last two letters of Arcadia. Anita Baldwin (1876-1939) was the daughter of Elias Jackson ‘Lucky’ Baldwin (1828-1909) and both were significant figures in the history and development of Southern California. Not least in establishing Arcadia as a City and Lucky Baldwin became its first Mayor. Anita was an independent and philanthropic woman who inherited a love of animals from her father and when she built her home she also established a breeding farm for livestock and purebred horses. She also established the Anoakia kennels. The California Poppy is the State flower of California and an article in the Pasadena Star News, dated April 5th 1916, has the headline “California Poppy is used as a trophy Design by Mrs Anita Baldwin. Granted copyright by U.S Government to owner of Anokia (sic) Kennels.” The article goes on to say: “The California poppy is the design of the trophy, the flower forming the bowl, while the stem is in the shape of the leaves. The design is one that has been greatly admired and for that reason Mrs Baldwin had it copyrighted.” Sotheby’s Paris, April 15 2010, sold an American punch bowl, without hallmarks and makers marks “..in form of the Californian poppy, prising large punch bowl and stand, 12 c and a punch ladle, engraved ANOAKIA”. The Roseberys coffee set shows similarities to the Sotheby’s punch set.  (Sadly, preservationists were unable to save the Anoakia mansion and it was demolished in 2000, the site is now a gatedmunity known as Anoakia Estates.)(112 ozs). Some tarnishing to all surfaces, with light wear, some old marks and rubbing. Normal wear to bases and underside of tray and some stains to top of the bases of the receptacles. Only the sugar tongs are marked with maker's marks and 'Sterling', al
