A bronze censer of the so called 'Palestinian type', consisting of a heavy cast segmented or 'poppy head' body with a raised foot and straight rim and three circular lugs for suspension for the chains. Usually given to the 6/8th c AD. The Greek description on the rim which is showing the name of the individual who donated the censer to the church to where it was donated. The lugs are decorated with three pellets which serve to strengthen the attachment of the circlets to the body. The object has a wonderful dark olive green patina. 11 cm. diam., 8 cm. heightCONDITION Fair condition. PROVENANCE Property of a Munich gentleman collection acquired on the Europe art market in the 1990s. NOTES This censer with its distinctive, slightly worn in appearance raised cast decoration is typical of the 'Palestinian type' of censer. For similar examples see I.
