DEACCESSIONED FROM THE COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG FOUNDATION TO BENEFIT THE JOSEPH H. AND JUNE S. HENNAGE ACQUISITION FUND TWO ENAMELED PORCELAIN FIGURES OF DOGSQianlong period, 1750-1770 One painted primarily in iron-red depicting a seated spaniel, the other painted primarily in grey enamel depicting a pug dog, both modelled looking to one side and wearing a thin collar, green for the spaniel and iron-red for the pug, suspending a large bell with traces of gilding, their bushy tails curled to one side. Each approx. 7 in (17.8cm) high 清乾隆時期 1750-1770年 琺瑯彩瓷犬擺件兩件 For examples of a similar seated grey pug dog and a recumbent sepia-glazed spaniel, see David Howard and John Ayers, Masterpieces of Chinese Export Porcelain from the Mottahedeh Collection in the Virginia Museum , London and New Jersey, 1981, pp. 76-77, nos. 622-623. The authors note that although the pug dog is native to China, the examples destined for export are plainly based on European models that were supplied for that purpose, in particular the models designed for the Meissen factory by J.J. Kaendler from 1734 onward. They also note that the small, long-haired and long-eared breed of spaniel is widely supposed to have been popularized in England during the reign of Charles II (1660-1685). Like the pug dog, the King Charles spaniel was a result of interbreeding with a type brought from China.
