AN EMERLAD-GREEN GLAZED 'HUNTING SCENE' POTTERY VASE, HAN DYNASTY
China, 206 BC to 220 AD. Of compressed globular form, rising from a tapering foot to a waisted neck, the shoulders encircled by a band depicting a hunting scene with mythical beasts, dragons, birds, and two taotie masks issuing mock ring handles, all in high relief. Covered in a thick layer of deep emerald-green glaze, pooling nicely at the upper rim to form a number of distinct glaze drops.
Provenance: Prima Porta Antiquities, Galeria Sztuki Starozytnej, Warsaw, Poland, 15 April 2005. A Polish private collection, acquired from the above. A copy of a Certificate of Authenticity from Prima Porta Antiquities, dated 15 April 2005, written and signed by Dr. Matthias Renz, and confirming the dating above, accompanies this lot.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and manufacturing flaws, such as firing cracks, glaze flaking and fine cracks, few light scratches, the base with two drilled holes from sample-taking.
Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 28 February 2022, based on sample number C122c62, sets the firing date of two samples taken at between 1500 and 2400 years ago. A copy of the report, issued by Oxford Authentication, accompanies this lot. A copy of an associated report from Antiques Analytics, Institute for Scientific Authenticity Testing, dated 11 March 2022, written and signed by Dr. Robert Neunteufel, accompanies this lot.

In the Han dynasty, daily utensils were usually made of stoneware and goods for burial were made of earthenware. The hunting scene that decorates this vase suggests that the deceased was a nobleman, as hunting was a pastime of the aristocracy.

漢代綠釉狩獵紋雙輔首陶瓶
